multinational (n) | a very large company that has offices, stores, etc. in many different countries but that is controlled from the country where it was started |
manufacture (v) | to produce goods in large numbers, especially in a factory using machines |
collapse (n) | to suddenly fail or become unable to continue |
attempt (n) | to try to do something, especially something difficult |
rival (n) | a person, company, product, etc. competing with others for the same thing or in the same area |
burst (v) | 1. to break open or apart suddenly, or to make something do this. 2. to feel a strong emotion, or strong wish to do something |
praise (v) | to express admiration or approval of the achievements or characteristics of a person or thing |
precise (adj) | exact and accurate |
resist (v) | to fight against something or someone; to refuse to accept or be changed by something |
maintain (v) | to make something continue in the same way or at the same level |
scratch (v) | to cut or damage a surface or your skin slightly with or on something sharp or rough |
instant (adj) | happening immediately, without any delay |
slum (n) | a poor area of a city where the houses are in bad conditions |
preconceived (adj)- (of an idea or an opinion) | formed too early, especially without enough thought or knowledge |
ash (n) | the soft grey or black powder that is left after a substance, especially tobacco, coal, or wood, has burned |
limestone (n) | a white or light grey rock that is used as a building material and in the making of cement |
blend (n) | a mixture of different things or styles |
melting furnace (n) | a container that is heated to a very high temperature, so that substances that are put inside it, such as metal, will melt or burn |
modify (v) | to change something such as a plan, opinion, law, or way of behaviour slightly, usually to improve it or make it more acceptable |
refine (v) | 1.to improve something or to make it pure, especially by removing material that is not wanted. 2. to improve an idea, a method, a system, etc. by making small changes |
sturdy (adj) | physically strong and solid or thick, and therefore unlikely to break or be hurt |
robust (adj) | strong and unlikely to break or fail |
versatile (adj) | able to change easily from one activity to another or able to be used for many different purposes |
audible (adj) | able to be heard |
dispatch (v) | to send someone to a place for a particular purpose |
appeal (v) | a request to a law court or other official organization to change a previous decision |
cooling off period (n) | an agreed length of time in which someone can decide not to buy something they have agreed to buy, or a period in which two groups who are arguing can try to improve the situation before taking further action |
obvious (adj) | easy to see, recognize, or understand |
essence (n) | the basic or most important idea or quality of something |
shift (v) | to move something to a different place or position; to change an opinion, idea, etc. |
