Adulteration | the mishandling of medication that can lead to contamination/ impurity, falsification of contents, or loss of drug quality or potency |
Analgesic | A drug given in order to relieve pain. |
Barbiturate | A drug that acts as a central nervous system depressant, often employed in the treatment of seizures and as a sedative or hypnotic agent. |
Board of pharmacy | State board regulating the practice of pharmacy within the state. |
Boxed warning | Drug warning placed in the prescribing information or package insert of a product, indicating a significant risk of potentially dangerous side effects. |
Controlled Substance | Any drug or other substance that is scheduled I through V and regulated by the DEA |
Drug Enforcement agency | Federal agency within the U.S. Department of justice that enforces U.S. Laws and regulations related to controlled substances. |
Drug Facts and Comparisons | Reference book found in pharmacies that contains detailed information on medications. |
Food and Drug Administration(FDA) | Federal agency within the u.s. department of health and human services responsible for assuring the safety , Efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, the national food supply, cosemetics, and radioactive |
Inpatient pharmacy | A pharmacy in a hospital or institutional setting. |
Material safety data sheet(MSDS) | A document providing chemical product information. |
Medicaid | Federal and state-operated insurance program covering health care costs and prescription drugs for low-income children, adults, the elderly, and the disabled. |
Medicare | Federal and state-managed insurance program covering health care costs and prescription drugs for individuals older than sixty-five years old or younger with long term disabilities. |
Medicine | The science and art dealing with health maintenance; the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease ; or the easing of pain or discomfort. |
Misbranding | Labeling a product in a way that is false or misleading. |
Opioid | Any agent that binds to opioid receptors. |
Opium | An analgesic that is made from the poppy plant. |
