Type of good | Will influence the delivery system. If it is PERISHABLE OR FRAGILE |
What are the 5 Main forms of delivery? | Road, Rail, Air, Sea, Pipelne. |
Road Advantages | Fast over short distances, Door to Door delivery, Minimum handling, Convenient and cheap |
Road disadvantages | Congestion, Bad weather may delay, Not suitable for bulky goods, Slow over long distances. |
Rail advantages | Fast over long distances, Suitable for bulky goods Reliable, Cheap for bulky goods. |
Rail disadvantages | Not flexible, Lot of handling, Not all parts have a rail line, Expensive over short distances. |
Sea advantages | Suitable for bulky goods, Cheaper then air, Suitable for containers, Good facilities at ports, Modern ships large loads. |
Sea disadvantages | Slow over long distances, Weather conditions delay, Not flexible, Must link with other forms of transport, High insurance costs. |
Air advantages | Fastest method over long distances, Suitable for expensive goods, Good safety record, Less packing, Modern aircraft large loads. |
Air disadvantages | Expensive, Bad weather delays, Must link with other forms of transport, Not flexible, Not suitable for bulky goods. |
Pipeline advantages | Safe, Cheap to maintain. |
Pipeline disadvantages | Expensive to install, Only suitable for liquids or gases. |
Motorways | Large roads often have three or more lanes and bypass traffic |
Regional airports | Smaller airports that serve a particular region |
Tunnels | Used to reduce the amount of traffic |
Toll roads | people have to pay to use these more modern roads |
Luas | A light rail system that helps people to get around quickly in Dublin |
A Pipeline | is a system of inter-connected pipes laid down to transport something over long distance |
A common carrier | is an individual or company that transports goods or people for a fee |
A courier | is a person or company that delivers documents and small,valuable packages byt hand |
Freight | refers to goods being transported |
A pallet | is a specially designed platform, usually wooden,on to which a large quantity of goods can be loaded to make it easy to move them |
A forklift | is an easily manoeuvrable transport device with two protruding rigid steel bars that can be raised and lowered . it is used to move pallets |
Quality bus corridors | are parts of a public road that can only be used by buses and taxis |
Bypasses | are roads built specifically to divert traffic away from villages,towns and cities |
Bicycle lanes | are parts of a public road that can only be used by cyclists |
A refrigerated mode of transport | refers to any form of transport -e.g trucks,vans and ships- that has a refrigerator incorporated into it |

Carriage Outwards | Cost you add to sales for getting them to the customer. |

Time = | Distance ÷ Speed |
Speed = | Distance ÷ Time |
formula for calculating delivery time | distance divided by speed |
Calculating delivery time | Work out distance. Calculate the average speed and allow for stops |
Distance tables | are gridded tables showing the distance between various places |
Tachographs | are devices installed on commercial vehicles that record the vehicles speed and the length of time that it is moving or stationary |
Roll-on/roll off(RO/RO) | ferries are ship designed to allow cars and fully loaded trucks to drive directly on to and off them |
Load on/load off(LO/LO) | ferries are ships designed to allow goods to be lifted on to and off them ,e.g by cranes |
