Define Leadership The ability to direct people, give them instructions and make them follow follow and obey you.
What are the three types of leadership styles Autocratic, Democratic and Laissez Faire
Describe an Autocratic Leader The manager makes all the decisions without consulting the employees.
Describe a Democratic Leader The manager involves employees when making decisions.
Describe Laissez Faire Leadership The manager does not interfere with how employees do their work.
What is Delegation? An important part of being a leader is delegating work to employees
What is an example of Delegation? The Human Resources Manager might ask his assistant to interview candidates for an important vacancy in the business because he doesn't have time to do it.
Advantage of Delegation is Sharing the work out among the employees gets the work done faster.
Disadvantage of refusing to delegate is Employees are unhappy. They think that the manager has no faith in their abilities.
Importance of Effective Leadership Improved Efficiency, Improved Co-ordination, Employee Retention and Change.
Definition of Management A process that involves a manager working with people and using other resources such as money and equipment to ensure that the business achieves its goals.
Characteristics of Managers Charismatic, Decision and a Hard worker
What is Motivation? Is the willingness of people to work
Name the 2 Motivational Theories Maslows Hierarchy of Needs McGregors Theory X & Y Managers
What is meant to Maslows Hierarchy of needs? Managers must determine which level of needs his workers are trying to satisfy so he knows how best to motivate them to work hard.
List the 5 stages of Maslows Hierarchy of needs Self-Actualistion Esteem Needs Social Needs Safety Needs Physiological Needs
What do McGregors Theory X managers believe? Hate work Have no ability Workers need tight control

What do McGregors Theory Y managers believe? Workers can enjoy work Workers have ability Can be trusted

Non-verbal Communication Communication expressed through facial and hand or body gestures.
Written Communication Communication by written symbols(written or prinetd)
Oral Communication Communication by word of mouth.
Notice A document that is used to display important information either within or outside of a business to a wide audience. Within a business it would be put on a notice board, eg it could be used to advise employees who their area first aider is.
Letter A formal document, often paper based, that is used to communicate both within and outside of a business. For example it could be used to invite a person for an interview or for communicating a customer complaint.
Memo An internal, informal paper based document for sending messages between employees.
Email An electronic method of communicating. Each sender and recipient has their own individual address. Messages can be sent with attachments, pictures, web links etc. Take care though this is not a legally binding form of communication.
Communication This involves transferring information from one person to another.
Types of Communicaiton Internal and External
Internal Communication Internal communicaiton can be upward, downward or horizontal. it is between two or more parties inside the same business.
Examples of Internal Communication Notice Board, Internal Phone, suggestion box, memo, pager, intercom
External Communication This is between a business and other people outside the business
Examples of External Communication Telephone, E mail, Letter, Video COnferencing, Press Conferencing
Written Communicaiton Letter, Fax, E-mail, Reports The written word
Oral Communicaiton The Spoken word - Face to face conversations, Intercom, telephone, Meeting
Visual Communicaiton Pictures symbols, diagrams and maps. Exampls, Bar charts, Pie Charts, Line Graph
Barriers to Effective Communicaiton Language, Prejudice, Information overload, Poor listening skills, trust, Timing
