Elements of Plot

TermDefinition
Plot The series of actions and events that take place in a story
Setting The time and the place in which a story occurs
Conflict a struggle between opposing characters and/or forces
Exposition Provides readers with the background information they need to understand the story; includes characters and setting.
Rising Action Things begin to happen; the conflict is introduced; tension builds
Climax The moment of greatest tension in the conflict; the turning point of the story
Falling action The consequences of the protagonist's action or decision play out; the conflict is finally decided
Resolution The unfinished parts of the plot are resolved; the story comes to its conclusion
