What does the nervous system serve as? The bodies primary communication and control system
What does the nervous system do? Collect information, process and evaluate info, and initiate response to info
What are receptors? specialized nervous system structures that monitor changes in internal and external environment.
What are the nervous systems two anatomic divisions? Central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system(PSN)
What does the central nervous system include? Brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system include? Bundles of neuron process (axon) and the ganglia nerves
What are the nervous systems two functional divisions? Sensory nervous system and motor nervous system
What is the sensory nervous system responsible for? receiving sensory information from receptors that detect stimuli and transmitting this info to CNS
What are the two subdivisions of the sensory nervous system? Somatic sensory and visceral sensory
What is the somatic sensory? Detects stimuli that can consciously perceive. Example- The five senses
What is the visceral sensory? Detects stimuli that we do not consciously perceive. Example- Blood vessels and internal organs

What are the two subdivisions of the motor nervous system? Somatic motor and autonomic motor
What is somatic motor? initiates and transmits motor output from CNS to skeletal muscles. Example - exert voluntary control over your leg muscles when pressing gas pedal
