what are the elements of design? color, shape, texture, space, shape/form, harmony
what are the principles of design? balance, rythm, proportion/scale, emphasis, unity
what is the principle repetition? when the design is copied or repeated
how does texture affect color? how it reflects off a surface
what do curved lines suggest? softer than straight lines, express fluid movement
whats the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? horizontal balance is when the left and right parts are equal. vertical balance is when the top and bottom parts are equal. radial balance is when the elements radiate out from the design.
what do diagonal lines suggest? unbalanced, more dramatic than horizontal/vertical lines, never ending falling/rising lines
what is space? area provided for a particular purpose
what are the 4 types of rhythm? gradation, radiation, repetition, and continuous line
what is asymmetrical balance? example? when the design is somewhat balanced, but not identical. ex: rooms
what is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? horizontal lines run from side to side and vertical lines run up and down
what is the golden mean? 3-5
whats the difference between shape and form? shape is flat surfaces, form is 3D
what are 5 types of balance? asymmetrical, symmetrical, vertical, horizontal, radial
what does harmony mean? all the elements and principles of design work together to create harmony
what are the 2 things texture involves? how the surface feels, and how it appears to feel
what are 4 types of lines? horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved
what is proportion? how the design is visually divided
which of the 5 types of balance suggest excitement or interest? radial
what is symmetrical balance? example? when both sides of the design are identical. ex: plants, insects, humans
what is emphasis and whats another name for it? one object or item that stands out and another name for it is focal point
what happens when you use a continuos line? your eye follows the line
what is another name for symmetrical balance? informal
what is another name for asymmetrical balance? formal
what is the difference between gradation and radiation? gradation is when designs increase/decrease in size and radiation is when a design starts from the center and moves out from it
