Terms for the different parts of Letters and E-mail
| Term | Definition |

| Body | The message of a document |
| Complimentary Closing | "Sincerely", "Yours truly", "Best regards", etc. after the end of the message |
| Salutation | "Dear ______," or "Dear _______:" |
| Signature | Written name of the message sender. For email, this is at the bottom and may include pictures, quotes, or contact information like websites or phone numbers. |
| Inside Address | Address of the person to whom the message is to go, may include their name and job title |
| Return Address | Street address of the person who wrote the message, possibly include the date, and their phone number |
| Enclosure | Something included with a letter in an envelope, perhaps a picture or form |
| Subject | Part of an e-mail that previews what the message is about |
| Sender | The creator or writer of the message |
| Recipient | The person who gets or receives the message |
| Letter | A document written with personal or business content, sent through the mail or similar service |
| An electronic document with personal or business content, sent through the internet | |
| Chat | Text, audio, or video message posted in an online chat room |
| Emoji | A picture character meant to convey some sort of emotion or thought |
| Emoticon | Keyboard characters in the form of a picture meant to convey some sort of emotion or thought |
| Writer's Typed Name | The last part of a letter or email. Comes after the closing and before the signature. |
| Attachment | A file included with an email, perhaps a picture or other documents |
| Spam | Junk email. Often advertisements |
| Phishing | An email that seems to look like something official (like a bank or business), and links to a website that asks you to disclose personal information |
| Carbon Copy | A kind of recipient of an email message, but only to be made aware of the communication |
| Blind Carbon Copy | A kind of recipient of an email message, but has their email address hidden from others |
| Relevant (and what is its opposite?) | Currently is related to something |
| Irony and sarcasm | Kinds of humor not appropriate to professional and academic communication |
| Tone | Attitude |
| Concise | Focused on the idea |
| Etiquette | Rules for behavior |
| Excessive | Too much |
| Misinterpretation | Taking something the wrong way |
