cloud computing | For an end user, using a free or subscription service delivered over the Internet. For an IT organization, the infrastructure and software used to deliver services online. |
cloud | The Internet, as used to deliver online services such as file storage and web-based apps. |
data center | A location housing a large computing operation with numerous networked servers. |
utility computing | The bundling and selling of computing resources by providers. |
virtual server | A server created by software rather than separate hardware. Multiple virtual servers can be hosted by a single physical server. |
virtualization | The technology used to make virtual servers and software and other types of hardware- and software-independent offerings. Virtualization software can create multiple operating servers running on a single physical server machine. |
scalable server | A virtual or software-based server that can be made larger or smaller or moved around easily. |
provisioning | A configuration or setup process that allows IT staff to add and remove new cloud services at will, since virtual servers typically operate in a self-service fashion. |
deployment | The activities performed to set up an online offering such as a cloud infrastructure or a local software installation, including engineering and setup. |
private cloud | A cloud setup created for and used by a single organization. |
public cloud | A cloud setup whose resources exist for use by any organization, generally on a pay-as-you-go model. |
cloud service provider (CSP) | A provider that operates one or more data centers providing cloud capacity and services. Other organizations buy cloud capacity from the CSP as they need it. |
cloud management system | A combination of software and other solutions used to run cloud services. |
hybrid cloud | An arrangement in which some organizations choose to use both private and public cloud infrastructure. |
cloud bursting | A technique in which the private cloud handles the average workloads or demands, and when demands ramp up to a specified threshold, public cloud resources come online automatically. |
small and midsize businesses (SMBs) | A group that includes small businesses with fewer than 100 employees and $50 million or less annual revenue and midsize businesses with 100 to 999 employees and up to $1 billion in revenue. |
