TermDefinition
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model A conceptual model that describes seven steps, or layers, in the process of sending and receiving network data: physical, data link, network, transport, session, presentation, and application.
protocol A set of rules for how things will happen.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) A network protocol that a web browser uses primarily to receive and display web pages.
Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) A protocol that an email application may use to receive mail.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) A protocol that an email application may use to send mail.
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) A protocol that is used to manage a server-based email interface.
Telnet An application-specific protocol that provides a command-line interface for interacting with remote computers. Telnet is mostly obsolete but still used in specialized applications.
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) One of the two main protocols that make up TCP/IP, the protocol suite on which the Internet is based. The TCP portion manages the transportation and delivery of data.
Internet Protocol (IP) One of the two main protocols that make up TCP/IP, the protocol suite on which the Internet is based. The IP portion manages the addressing of the data to be delivered.
TCP/IP Short for Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol. The main protocol suite used today for Internet networking, as well as most business and home networks.
default gateway The port through which data leaves the router to go to another network.
network address translation (NAT) A process that automatically changes the IP addresses on the data going into and out of the router as needed.
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) An organization that is responsible for global coordination of the assignment of IP addresses.
Ethernet The dominant standard for wired and wireless networking. The Ethernet is logically a bus topology, but physically it can be a mesh, star, bus, or hybrid topology.
1000BaseT The most common type of Ethernet found on the market today. The number at the beginning of the name represents the maximum speed (1,000 Mbps), and the number or letter following Base refers to the type of cable (T for twisted-pair).
