network topology | The layout or pattern by which a network is organized. |
bus topology | A topology in which all computers and devices are linked by a single line of cable with two endpoints. |
transceiver | A device that sends messages along the bus in either direction. |
carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) | The method used in Ethernet networks, and other network types that use a logical bus, for detecting and correcting data collisions. |
star topology | A network topology in which multiple computers and peripheral devices are linked to a central gathering point—typically, a switch or a router—in a point-to-point configuration resembling a star. |
ring topology | A network topology in which there is no central hub; each computer or device is part of a circle of computers and devices. |
token ring topology | A ring topology in which data collision is avoided by passing a token between computers and allowing only the computer with the token to place data on the network. |
token | A permission that allows a computer to send data to the network on a token ring network. |
mesh topology | A network topology that connects multiple computers and devices to multiple computers and devices, so that many different paths exist from any one location to any other location. |
hybrid topology | A system that mixes topologies in a network. |
