Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) | A tagging or markup language that has long been used to create web pages. The tags identify elements such as headings and formatting such as fonts and colors. |
markup language | A language that includes a set of specifications for describing elements that appear on a page—for example, headings, paragraphs, backgrounds, and lists. |
cascading style sheets (CSS) | A separate formatting language that can be used along with HTML to make the design for a web page or site more consistent and easier to update. |
tag | Code inserted within an HTML file to define various page elements, such as language type, body, headings, and paragraph text. A tag is enclosed in angle brackets. Tags generally must be used in pairs—an opening tag and a closing tag. |
hypertext document | A web document created with HTML that presents information usually enhanced with hyperlinks to other websites and pages. |
hyperlink | An element on a web page that the user clicks to navigate to another web page or location. Hyperlinks most commonly appear as underlined text, buttons, photos or drawings, and navigation bars or menus. Also called link or web link. |
Extensible Markup Language (XML) | A markup language used to organize and standardize the structure of data so computers can communicate with each other directly. |
metalanguage | A language for describing other languages. |
