Term | Definition |

disk drive | A mechanical device that reads data from and writes data to a disk, such as a hard disk or DVD. |
solid-state drive (SSD) | A storage device that stores data in nonvolatile memory rather than on a disk platter. |
volume | A storage unit with a letter assigned to it, such as C or D. |
root directory | The top level of the storage hierarchy within a volume. |
folder | A logical organizing unit for file storage on a volume. |
child folder | A folder that is located within another folder. Also called subfolder. |
parent folder | A folder that contains a child folder. |
path | The complete description of the location of a file on a storage volume. |
folder tree | A conceptual graphic that helps illustrate the hierarchical structure of a file storage system. |
file extension | A short code (usually three or four characters) that appears at the end of the file name, separated from the name by a period, to identify the file type. |
file association | A relationship set up in the operating system between a certain file extension and a certain application that can open that type of file. |
