Term | Definition |

system software | Software that runs application software, starts up the computer, keeps it running smoothly, and translates human-language instructions into computer-language instructions. |
basic input/output system (BIOS) | Software that is stored on a chip on a circuit board, such as the motherboard, and provides the initial startup instructions for the hardware. Also called firmware. |
firmware | See basic input/output system (BIOS). |
operating system (OS) | Software that provides the user interface, manages files, runs applications, and communicates with hardware. |
utility program | Software that performs troubleshooting or maintenance tasks that keep the computer running well and protect the computer from security and privacy violations. |
translator | Software that translates programming code into instructions that can be run as programs. |
