Term | Definition |

Computer | electronic device that is used to store, retrieve, and manipulate information (data) electronically. |
CPU (Central Processing Unit) | silicon chip that processes data and carries out instructions given to the computer. |
Hard Drive | a non-removable drive, which is fast and holds a great deal of information. |
Hardware | parts of the computer you can see and touch. |
Icons | small pictures to remind you of each button’s function. |
Input Devices | used to enter data into a computer (keyboard, mouse, etc.) |
Monitor | output device that provides a visual representation of the information stored in the computer. |
Mouse | handheld device you use to move a pointer on the screen. |
Output Devices | any device which allows information to flow out of the computer (monitor, printer) |
RAM (Random Access Memory) | number of silicon chips inside a computer that hold information as long as the computer is turned on. |
ROM (Read-Only Memory) | small bit of memory that stays in the computer when it is turned off. This allows the computer to boot up. |
Software | collection of programs and other data input that tells the computer how to operate and how to manipulate data. |
Virus | computer program that causes damage to software or files on a computer. |

LAN (Local Area Network) | when all the computers in a network are close together, such as in the same building. |
Modem | Piece of equipment that connects a computer to the telephone lines. |

Network | two or more computers linked together to share files, software, and resources, such as printers. |
Search Engine | program used to search the Internet for any requested subject. |
Server | computer in a network that controls the flow of data among other computers. |
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) | Internet address. |
WAN (Wide Area Network) | attached computers in a network are spread apart geographically, across a state or country. |
Web Browser | software used to display web pages on your computer monitor. |
World Wide Web | system of computers that share information by means of hypertext links. |
