Control+D To remove a selection (marching ants) use this keystroke
Reselect If you accidentally remove a selection, access this feature under the Select menu to get it back
Magic Wand Selection tool used to easily select, typically in one click, a solid background
Tolerance Adjusting this before using the magic wand will affect how "picky" the wand it
Options bar The place where you modify the Tolerance
Refine Edge Press this button on the Options bar to "preview" a selection and modify settings, such as expand, smooth, or increase contrast
Edge Detection Using this option in Refine Edge allows you to modify the radius or access the Smart Radius option to create a better edge on a selection
Marquee This selection tool can be used to select in a rectangular or elliptical shape
Shift To draw a perfect circle with the Elliptical Marquee tool, hold this while dragging
Color Range This selection option is not a "tool" but rather a way, through a menu, to select one whole color in an image
Inverse To select the opposite of the current selection, you select the:
Lasso This is a freehand selection tool that allows you to drag your mouse while holding down the button to make a selection
Polygonal Lasso This selection tool allows you to click points around your image to create a selection
Backspace When using the Polygonal or Magnetic lasso tools, press this to delete the current point as you are making the selection
Magnetic Lasso This selection tool allows you to select an object by tracing its outline; you drag near the outline and it magically adheres to the edges of the item you are trying to select
Quick Selection This selection tool allows you to drag across an image to select an item
[ Use this to decrease your brush size when using the Quick Selection tool
] Use this to increase your brush size when using the Quick Selection tool
Hand Holding Spacebar when selecting will switch to this tool
New Selection If you want to create an entirely new selection, removing any previous selection, be sure this is clicked on the Options bar
Subtract from Selection If you are using a selection tool and select too much, you can remove part of the current selection by clicking this option
Transparent A "checkerboard" area on the background means the background is:
Double Click If you need to unlock the Background layer, simply point to the layer and do this:
Opacity Modify this on the Layers panel to make your layer partially transparent
0 Setting the Opacity to this will make the layer invisible
