| Adjustments | Discrepancy between actual shipment & Bill of Lading. |
| Axle Load | Weight limit for each axle over the nation's highways. |
| Back Haul | Second half of round trip which the freight shipping costs are less than the first half. |
| Bill of Lading | BOL; contract between shipper and carrier, broker, or agent binding and arranging what is being shipped, to whom and more. |
| Blocking | Bracing product (skids, car, etc.) using wood or other supports to keep shipments in place in containers. |
| Bulk Freight | Freight that is not contained within packages or containers. |
| Cartage | Shipping freight within same city or area. |
| Common Carrier | Carrier that is hired by anyone who transports goods. |
| Consolidation | Two or more shipments that are combined to save money on freight shipping costs. |
| Container | Similar to the trailer attached to a truck, but without wheels. Common in international shipping. |
| Cubic Capacity | Total freight load capacity of any truck. |
| Customs Broker | Person or company that is licensed by the U.S. Treasury Department to act on behalf of freight importers and exporters with respect to U.S. Customs transactions. |
| Embargo | An event which prevents the freight from being accepted; includes floods, tornadoes, or congested highways. |
| Exceptions | A problem such as shortage or damaged product which is noted at the time of delivery, an exception is noted on the delivery sheet before it is signed. |
| Gross Vehicle Weight | GVW; Total weight of the transport and it's cargo. |
| Inbound Freight | Shipments coming from vendors to a storage facility. |
| Cross-Dock | Transfer of freight between carriers or within one carrier group. |
| Inter-modal Transportation | When freight is shipped using two or more modes of transport. This typically refers to truck-rail-truck shipments |
| Through Rate | Applies to the distance between the point of origin and the delivery destination. |
| Time-Critical | Delivery is set to the earliest possible time. |
| Time-Definite | Delivery is guaranteed to occur on a specific date and/or time of day. |
| Transit Time | Total time from pick-up to delivery. |
| Truckload | Half or more than the trailer's capacity. |
| Warehousing | Refers to the storage of goods for a specified period of time. |
| Intent to Claim | Legal document defining the intention to fine a carrier regarding product damage, lateness, etc. |
