Action Relies on eye/hand coordination and skill to play games like Legend of Zelda.
Adventure Role playing, inventory management, story and puzzle solving
Augmented-Reality Incorporates peripheral devices like camera and GPS into gameplay
Educational To educate while entertaining. Usually aimed at younger audiences.
Party For several players to compete in a variety of different styles of gameplay from quizzes to games of skill.
Puzzle Based on logic, observation, and pattern completion.
Rhythm Matching a rhythm or beat to score points
Serious Focus on social issues
Shooter Firing projectiles at each other

Strategy Thinking and planning. One of the oldest genres of games.
Traditional Based on games that existed in other, often physical formats. Card games, board games and casino games fall into this genre.
