Definition of Language A socially shared system for representing concepts through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule-governed combinations of those symbols
Definition of Receptive Language The ability to understand another's language
Definition of Expressive Language The communication of one's thoughts, ideas, desires, or intentions to another
Definition of Extra Linguistic Extra in this sense means outside or external so the extralinguistic elements in communication are those beyond or in addition to the linguistics (words of language and communication)
Definition of Paralinguistics Speech mechanisms that signal attitude or emotion
Paralinguistic Elements (5) Intonation
Definition of Metalinguistics Our ability to talk about language, analyze it, think about it, separate it from its context, and judge it
Non-Linguistic Elements (6) Gestures
Communication Model A speaker sends an intended meaning to a listener who receives a perceived meaning. Between them is the shared space which includes both the linguistic and non-linguistic communication
