What is edema? Abnormal retention of fluids in the body resulting in swelling of the eyelids, face, limbs, trunk or entire body.
What are the crucial points in diagnosing edema? Distinguish between yang edema and yin edema. Identify whether edema is of an exterior or interior nature.
What is the difference between yang and yin edema? Yang edema is an acute, exterior, heat and/or excess condition w/shiny, tight, non-pitting skin. Yin edema is a chronic, interior, cold, deficient condition w/looser, dull, pitting skin.
What is the general treatment strategy for treating yang edema? Release the exterior, promote urination, expel evil qi
What is the general treatment strategy for treating yin edema? Strengthen the Spleen, warm the Kidneys, tonify the right qi, promote urination
What are the four patterns associated with yang edema? Invasion by wind; Invasion by damp-heat toxin; Inundation by water-dampness; Accumulation of damp-heat
What are the two patterns associated with yin edema? Spleen yang xu; Kidney yang xu
What are the treatment strategy and formula for invasion of wind? Expel wind, release the exterior, facilitate movement of Lung qi and remove water with Yue Bi Jia Zhu Tang
What are the treatment strategy and formula for invasion by damp-heat toxin? Diffuse Lungs, clear heat, relieve toxicity, eliminate dampness and reduce edema with Ma Huang Lian Qiao Chi Xiao Dou Tang plus Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin
What are the treatment strategy and formula for inundation by water-dampness? Fortify the Spleen, transform dampness, facilitate the flow of yang qi and promote urination with Wu Pi Yin plus Wei Ling Tang
What are the treatment strategy and formula for accumulation of damp-heat? Resolve damp, clear heat, reduce edema by inducing sweating and promoting urination with Shu Zao Yin Zi
What are the treatment strategy and formula for Spleen yang xu edema? Warm the yang, strengthen the Spleen, eliminate dampness and promote urination with Shi Pi Yin
What are the treatment strategy and formula for Kidney yang xu edema? Warm Kidney yang and promote urination with Ji Sheng Shen Qi Wan plus Zhen Wu Tang
What are the main s/s of invasion of wind? Acute onset, edema starting in the eyelids and spreading to the limbs and body, shiny, thin skin, no pitting, oliguria, aversion to cold, fever, joint pain, coughing and wheezing, T:twc or tyc P:floating, slippery and tight or floating, slippery and rapid
What are the main s/s of invasion by damp-heat toxin? Acute onset, edema starting in the eyelids and spreading to the limbs and body, dermal sores, rashes and ulcerations, oliguria, aversion to wind, fever, severe itchiness, T:red w/twc, P:slippery or floating and rapid
What are the main s/s of inundation by water-dampness? Systemic pitting edema, oliguria, sensation of heaviness, chest stuffiness, nausea, poor appetite, T:greasy wtc, P:deep, slow
What are the main s/s of accumulation of damp-heat? Systemic pitting edema, bright, shiny skin, chest and epigastric stuffiness, irritability, thirst, scanty urine, constipation, T:greasy ytc, P:deep and rapid or soft and rapid
What are the main s/s of Spleen yang xu edema? Systemic pitting edema, esp. in the lower body, epigastric and abd distension, loose stools, poor appetite, sallow face, fatigue, cold limbs, oliguria, T:pale w/greasy wtc, P:deep and slow or deep and weak
What are the main s/s of Kidney yang xu edema? Puffy face, systemic pitting edema esp. lower body, decreased or increased urine output, palpitations, SOB, soreness, heaviness and cold low back and knees, frigid limbs, cold intolerance, listlessness, pale face, T:pale w/wtc, P:deep, forceless, slow
