What are local nationals? employees who are hired for a job within the employee's own country, while the company headquarters is in a different country. AKA host-country nationals
What are Expatriates? employees who work in a foreign country for a period of time. AKA parent-country national
What are third-country nationals? employees who are not from the company's home country nor from the host country.
What are Impatriates? employees who work for an international organization and are assigned (by the parent company) to return home and work in their home country. AKA foreign national employee
What are three strategies to HR global staffing? Ethnocentric Approach, Polycentric Approach, Geocentric Approach
What is an "Ethnocentric Approach" to Global HR Strategy? requires the HR staff to find and prepare employees, and possibly their families, for living and working in another country. Company headquarters control all HR activities, and subsidiaries are managed by expatriates from the firm's home country.
What is an "Polycentric Approach" to Global HR Strategy? host-country nationals become trained to manage the subsidiaries in their home countries. each country is treated as a separate entity with some decision-making done at the local level.
What is an "Geocentric Approach" to Global HR Strategy? places people above all nationalities.Trans-national philosophy is adopted at all levels of the organization. As such, the best employees are selected regardless of their home country.
