| Term | Definition |

| Communication | sending and receiving of information which prompts an action |
| Internal communication | any forms of communication that allows people within an organisation to communicate |
| External communication | communication between different organisations |
| Oral communication | spoken communication e.g. phone call, meeting, interview, intercom |
| Written communication | word processed communication e.g. memo, report, email |
| Memo | brief notes circulated within an organisation |
| Reports | written account or analysis of a particular topic |
| Visual communication | showing information visually e.g. pie charts, line graphs, bar charts and pictograms |
| Line Graph | shows trends i.e. how things change over time |
| Pie charts | a circle divided into sections, each section shows figures as a percentage of the total |
| Bar Charts | useful for making comparisons as the information is displayed in a series of bars |
| Pictogram | pictures or symbols are used to represent figures |
| Effective communication | is received, understood, accepted and is acted upon |
| ABC of communication | communication must be brief, clear and accurate |
| message exchange between computer users | |
| Internet | Users are linked to the internet and can access wide range of information from around the world |
| PowerPoint | presentation using slides containing pictures, texts and sound |
| Social Networking | using social networking sites to communicate with friends, share photos, leave messages, make comments e.g. facebook |
| Texting | sending messages between mobile phones |
