Being an employee
Term | Definition |

Work | performing a task without payment, any activity which requires effort |
Employment | working for payment |
Unemployment | when people are willing to work but can't find a job |
Labour force | all those who are available for work, it includes all those who are working and who are available for work |
Employee rights | to receive a fair wage, to work in a safe environment, to join a trade union, and to receive their statutory holidays |
Employee responsibilities | to do a fair day's work, to follow instructions, not to reveal confidential information, to respect company property |
Organisational Chart | outlines the divisions of the company into different departments and shows the chain of command |
Self Employment | people who work for themselves rather than be employed by someone else |
Live register | list of all people who sign a register to claim social welfare benefits |
Structural Unemployment | when industries that were major employers have gone in to decline and there is no longer demand for those skills |
Cyclical unemployment | temporary form of unemployment associated with downturn in the economy |
Seasonal unemployment | people working in certain industries have no employment for the off-season |
Technology-related unemployment | when people are replaced by machines and computers in the workplace |
Managing director | is most senior person in the firm who is in charge of day-to-day running of the business |
Marketing manager | responsible for the marketing department |
Human Resource Manager | responsible for recruiting, training, and dealing with IR issues |
Jobs | many types of jobs including manual, clerical, technical, administrative, services and creative |
Manual | physical work such as building |
Clerical | office work such as typing |
Administrative | work that involves organising all the tasks necessary to get a job done |
Services | jobs that involves providing a service to others e.g. teaching |
Creative | jobs that require a creative talent e.g. graphic artist |
Professional skills | have a professional qualification e.g. engineer |
Skilled | skill obtained from a training course or apprenticeship |
Semi-skilled | Training in one area e.g. machine operator |
Unskilled | Have no training whatsoever |
