Key IR terms

| Industrial relations | relationship between employers and employees in the workplace |
| Trade Union | an organisation which represents workers and which seeks to protect and improve their members working conditions |
| Shop steward | elected by co-workers and is union representative in the workplace |
| Craft union | union where members have the same trade or skill e.g. TEEU |
| Industrial union | represents all workers in a particular industry e.g. ESBOA |
| General Trade Union | represents all categories of workers e.g. SIPTU |
| White-collar union | represent people who work in office jobs or in the service industry e.g. TUI |
| ICTU | Irish Congress of Trade Unions which represents trade union movement in Ireland |
| IBEC | Irish Business & Employers Confederation which represents employer interests |
| TEEU | Technical Engineering and Electrical Union |
| ESBOA | Electricity Supply Board's Officers' Association |
| TUI | Teachers Union of Ireland |
| SIPTU | Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union |
| Demarcation dispute | conflict over who does particular tasks in the workplace |
| Conciliation | independent third person tries to help the parties in dispute find common ground |
| Arbitration | independent third party hears both sides and then makes a decision |
| LRC | Labour Relations Commission aims to improve industrial relations and helps resolve disputes |
| Equality Officers | appointed by LRC to provide conciliation service for equality issues |
| Rights Commissioner | appointed by LRC where there is a small group of workers and the issues relate to unfair dismissals, redundancies and maternity leave |
| Labour Court | is the court of last resort that resolves disputes that the other bodies couldn't and hears appeals |
| EAT | Employment Appeals Tribunal is an independent body that deals with disputed where employees think their rights have been infringed |
| Official strike | strike that is the result of a secret ballot and that has the approval of ICTU and the union |
| Unofficial strike | strike that does not have approval of the union |
| All-out Strike | is an official strike that is supported by other unions and ICTU |
| Wild-cat strike | is an unofficial strike where no notice of industrial action has been given |
| Work-to-rule | form of industrial action where workers remain in work but only carry out essential elements of their employment |
| Unfair dismissal | a dismissal is unfair if it based on the political beliefs of a worker, their race, pregnancy or trade union membership |
| Fair dismissal | if its a result of bad employee behaviour, not qualified or part of redundancy package |
| Equality | treating all workers equally |
| Discrimination | the treatment of a worker in a less favourable way than another worker has or would be treated in the same circumstances |
