1. Why is cost an important element in the design mix? 2. Why might cost be less important? 1. A product may be designed to minimise production costs. This will give the business a competitive edge when it comes to price. 2. A well designed product may have required higher research and development spending in order to create a quality product
What is scientific research? What is a prototype? Research and development (R&D). R&D teams use computer models to create prototypes. A prototype is a test product used to identify problems in the product.
What is the buffer stock level and why is important to a business like Holland and Barrett? Buffer stock level is the ‘Just in Case’ amount of stock held. Holland and Barrett supply healthy products like seeds and nuts. If they run out of items such as Brazil nuts then customers will go to other health food shops.
Why does a large business like Argos need to use effective stock control? Argos offers a large range of home and personal goods. People are expecting everything in the catalogue to be in the store. If they run out of stock of these goods then it will damage reputation. As a result people will switch to rivals like Amazon.
What is the buffer stock level and why is important to a business like Holland and Barrett? State two advantages and two disadvantages of a just in time production system Advantages -There are no storage costs of stock -No wasted time on the production line Disadvantages -Reliance on suppliers to deliver stock on time -May struggle to meet unexpected demand -One problem with production can slow everything down
The difference between quality control and quality assurance is…… Quality control checks quality at the end of production by looking for defects and problems whereas quality assurance means each worker checks for quality as they are working and flag up any issues.
4 costs of poor quality are: • Lost customers (expensive to replace – and they may tell other people about their bad experience) • Cost of reworking or remaking product • Costs of replacements or refunds • Wasted materials
Kaizen means….. Continuous improvement. The process of always trying to make the production process or service offered by the business better.
Productivity is…… Productivity is the OUTPUT (units produced) by a worker over a period of time. Better productivity = lower costs per worker This is a key point!!!!!!!!!
3 ways productivity can be improved 1. Training 2. Better Equipment 3. Improved work practices
4 ways other than productivity a business can use to cut costs…. 1.Improved purchasing – looking for cheaper suppliers or negotiating better deals 2.Relocate – cheaper rent or cost of buying property 3.Redesigning products – using less or cheaper materials 4.Cut Overheads – reducing marketing costs, utility bills
State 3 reasons why good customer service is important 1) Increased Sales 2) Satisfied Customers 3) A Better Public Image 4) An Edge Over the Competition 5) Repeat Business and Recommendation Remember that poor customer service has the opposite effect!
What are the features of The Trade Description Act Makes it illegal to give the consumer a deliberately misleading impression about a product by: 1. Giving false information 2. Failing to provide customers with information 3. Acting Aggressively
What are the features of The Sale of Goods Act Goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.
What happens if the consumer laws are broken? Trade Descriptions Act Government can prosecute those who break the law and issue fines or even prison sentences Sale of Goods Act The consumer has the right to compensation
Why does consumer protection exist? 1. To ensure do not use high pressure tactics to exploit vulnerable people 2. To ensure customers don’t lose their money on products that don’t work 3. For health and safety purposes – e.g. ensuring cheap chemicals are not used in clothing or food
Why does consumer protection add costs to businesses? Compliance Costs: Businesses may need to buy specialist equipment such as freezers for food storage or spend extra money on legal experts to check adverts. It can be very difficult for businesses to know and understand every aspect of the law
