Definitions of key words and terms for studying poetry

Poet A person who writes a poem
Stanza A verse
Phrase A group of words which express an idea
Image A picture in words
Theme The big idea in a poem
Tone The feeling or mood in a poem
Simile A comparison using like or as
Metaphor A comparison without like or as
Rhythm The beat
Repetition When words are repeated
Alliteration When 2 or more words start with the same sound
Onomatopoeia When a word sounds like its meaning.
Rhyme When words end with the same sound
