Genetic Engineering

TermDefinition
Genetic Engineering manipulating DNA for a particular purpose
Restriction Enzymes enzymes that cut DNA at certain sequences
Recombinant DNA when DNA from two different organisms are combined to create a new combination of DNA
Gene Cloning using restriction enzymes, combining a human gene sequence with a bacterial cell. Every time the bacteria replicate, the gene is cloned.
Reproductive Cloning cloning a whole organism, Taking the nucleus from a donor cell and inserting that into an egg cell. When the egg cell develops into an embryo, it is placed withing the uterus of a foster mother.
Therapeutic Cloning cloning tissues or spare parts by combining the nucleus of a body cell and inserting it into an egg cell. The stems cells are then used to develop tissues or spare parts.
Gene Therapy removing or replacing damaged genes withing a person's cells or tissues and replacing them with healthy ones usually by using viruses.
Gel Electorphoresis a technique used to separate DNA molecules based on size and charge.
DNA Fingerprinting Unique samples of DNA make unique banding patterns when using gel electrophoresis
Human Genome Project To completely sequence the human genome and to identify the location of various human genes
Cloning the process of creating one or more genetically copies of a gene, genome, or organism.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
