mouse an input device you move to manipulate on-screen elements
mouse pointer a geographical element (e.g. arrow, hourglass/watch, hand) used to move around the screen to select items, issue commands, and move and manipulate screen elements
multimedia the combining of more than one type of media, such as text, sound, animation, and video
menu bar a horizontal strip at the top of a window that shows the menus available in a program
menu a list of commands or options, especially one displayed on screen
numeric keypad The portion of a keyboard, setup like an adding machine or calculator used to enter numbers and equations quickly into the computer
network a group of connected computers that allows people to share information and equipment
net words per minute (NWPM)
optical disc storage medium which uses light to read data, examples include CD ROM, CDR, CDRW, DVD, Laser
paste places the contents of the clipboard into a document at the current cursor position
page setup the term in reference to the way a document is formatted to print
password a code for the security protection to allow access to a computer or the computer programs
portrait the default page setup that prints the document vertically
print to put what is on the computer screen on paper
public domain software written and then donated to the public; anyone can use and copy public domain software free of charge, but it is not always the same quality as commercial software
personal computer (PC) a microcomputer with its own processor and hard drive; although technically this refers to all such computers, including Macs, the term PC is nearly synonymous with only the IBM-compatible microcomputers
plain text this is text without extraneous codes that designate font size, font style, etc.
pulldown menu a list of options that "pulls down" when you select a menu at the top of a window
Return/Enter Key key on keyboard that is used to enter information into a computer or to return the cursor to the beginning of a new line
retrieve open a saved document
save (a file) to store a file on a hard or floppy disk
