Computer literacy vocabulary for middle school

TermDefinition
Bandwidth The total frequency range on the available carrier for the transmission of data,
Bookmark A stored location for quick retrieval at a later date. Web browsers provide bookmarks that contain the addresses (URLs) of favorite sites.
Browser Web browsers are built on the concept of hyperlinks on which a user can click with a mouse to jump from page to page, document to document, or even site to site. Browsers can download files, display graphics, play audio and video files.
Domain A group of workgroups within the same company or organization that governs the ability of all the computers to communicate with other groups of computers both within and outside of the organization
Download The act of transferring files or a program from one computer to another computer, or something transferred to a computer
Email A message sent from one computer to another over the Internet, using a set webmail server address
File Extension A short series of letters and/or numerals at the end of a personal computer filename, used to indicate the type of file and the software that will be required to operate or open it
Hard Drive The primary computer storage device and used to store files on the computer
Internet A connected group of computer networks allowing for electronic communication
IP Address A decimal number that defines the routing information of the Internet user. The address is composed of four sets of numbers, each separated by a decimal point
Copyrighted Software Software protected by law from being used without payment
Directory A simulated file folder on a disk where information can be stored
Malware Malicious computer software that interferes with normal computer functions or sends personal data about the user to unauthorized parties over the Internet
Netiquette Etiquette practiced or advocated in electronic communication over a computer network; exhibiting good manners
Public Domain Software Non-copyrighted software that is free for anyone to copy and use
Shareware Copyrighted computer software that is developed and made available to individual end users for free on a trial basis
Software Programs and routines for a computer or the program material for an electronic device which make it run.
Spyware A software program that secretly gathers personal information and sends it without the user's knowledge from a computer when it is online.
Upload To transfer a file copy from a local computer to a remote computer over a network
URL The definition of URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator, the address of a website on the Internet.
Virus A type of intrusive malware that replicates itself and inserts copies of itself in legitimate programs, where it carries out unwanted and often damaging operations
