TermDefinition
research & development (R&D) The process of creating and commercializing new technologies and products for new markets.
skunkworks An operation created to work outside of organizational constraints, with a more loosely organized team allowed to pursue extreme innovation—often also operating in a separate location away from a main corporate campus.
special projects lab The modern take on a skunkworks operation. Typically larger and a bit more formal than a skunkworks, a special project lab occupies the forefront of R&D efforts for such companies as Google and Facebook.
Google X Google’s special projects lab. The self-driving car as well as Google Glass are examples of technologies emerging from the Google X lab. Officially spelled Google [x).
