File types

Identify file types

QuestionAnswer
Is "agenda.doc" a document or program file? Document file. This would be a Word document. The clue is the file extension ".doc"
Is "Flyer.pub" a document or program file? Document file. This would be a Publisher file. The clue is in the file extension ".pub"
Is "map.gif" a document or program file? Document file. This is a graphic file. The clue is in the file extension ".gif"
Is "map.jpeg" a document or program file? Document file. It has the same file name "map" as "map.gif" but as you can see the extension is ".jpeg." This is a different type of graphic file.
Is "Explorer.exe" a document or program file? Program file. It is the file that launches (or starts) Internet Explorer. The clue is in the extension ".exe." This means it is an "executable" file - in other words, it STARTS a program.
Is "Explorer.html" a document or program file? Document file. The clue is in the file extension ".html" which is a file that contains web language or code. This file carries 'instructions' on what the web page will look like, and it's contents. This is why it is a document file.
Is "Excel.exe" a document or program file? A program file. This is because of the file extension ".exe" which identifies the file as an executable file. It STARTS the Excel program.
Is "database.xls" a document or program file? Document file. ".xls" identifies the file as an Excel file. It was created in Excel.
Is "Normal.dotx" a document or program file? Document file. If you look at the beginning of the file name, you can see "do" which lets you know that it was created in Word. Normally it would be ".doc" but with the "tx" on the end it is identifying the file as a template. It is a Word template.
Is "Invoice.docm" a document or program file? Document file. More specifically, it is a macro-enabled Word document. ".doc" is a Word document, plus "m" for macro.
Is "MarkingSchedule.pdf" a document or program file? Document file. It is a file that was created in a program such as Word, and then saved as a PDF file to protect it.
Is "Windows.hlp" a document or program file? Program file. The file extension identifies it as a "help" program. All "help" files are program files.
