| skimming | looking over material quickly to locate specific data |
| scanning | reading to get a basic understanding of objectives and important points in the text |
| careful reading | reading to understand and remember the material |
| average reader reads | 200-350 words per minute |
| exceptional readers read | 1000 words per minute |
| advanced readers read | 350-800 words per minute |
| focusing | one key to effective listening |
| active listening | listening to understand and remember the message |
| casual listening | a relaxed type of listening that involves little effort |
| non-verbal cues | speaker's tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions and posture |
| hearing | detecting sounds |
| focusing attention | concentrating on the speaker and message |
| reflective listening | used to understand and restate the message |
| informative listening | listening to obtain specific information and understand the message or instructions |
| understanding | attaching meaning to a message |
| remembering | recalling a message |
