Computer Components

TermDefinition
Application Software Software that does a specific task, such as word processing
Computer An electronic device that performs complex tasks at high speed and with great accuracy; it has 2 main parts- the processor and the memory
Disk Drive A mechanical device that you use to transfer information back and forth between the computers memory and disk
Firmware A kind of system software-instructions that are built into the computer system on ROM chips
Floppy Disk A magnetically coated disk on which information can be stored and retrieved
Hard Disk A large capacity storage area that offers fast access to store and retrieve information
Hardware The group of pats that make up the computer system; it can be seen and touched
Keyboard A device used to enter data and issue commands to the computer
Memory (RAM) The area of the computer that holds the instructions (programs) and information you give it. When you turn off the computer, data disapears
Monitor A screen that displays the information in the computer
Operating System Software that acts as a link between you, application software (program), and hardware
Printer A device that makes a hard copy of data in the computer
Processor (CPU) The part of the computer that processes the instructions in the memory (RAM)
ROM A chip that holds information that cannot be changed
System Software Software that runs the computer
Software Instructions that tell your computer how to perform a task. It is stored on disks in program files. It cannot be seen or touched. There are 2 main kinds: application and software
What are 3 objects located on the desktop? start button, task bar, and icons
Taskbar Bar on the desktop that lets you quickly start programs & easily switch between tasks
What does RAM stand for? Random Access Memory
What does CPU stand for? Computer Processing Unit
Stand Alone network one computer that doesn't share information with other computers
Network 2 or more computers linked together to share information/data
3 input devices of a computer keyboard, mouse, and scanner
What does ROM stand for? Read Only Memory
