Internet 101

TermDefinition
Server A server is a computer that "serves" many different computers in a network by running specialized software and storing information.
Client A client runs familiar software such as web browsers or email software, and it communicates with the server to get the information it requires.
World Wide Web The World Wide Web is a virtual network of websites connected by hyperlinks (or "links").
HTML The backbone of the World Wide Web is made of HTML files, which are specially formatted documents that can contain links, as well as images and other media.
URL to get to a webpage, you can type the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) into a browser.
Search Engine a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web
Intelligent Personal Assistants An intelligent personal assistant is a mobile software agent that can perform tasks, or services, for an individual based on user input, location awareness, and the ability to access information from a variety of online sources
Social Networking the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself.
Instant Messaging send (someone) an instant message
voIP VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or in more common terms phone service over the Internet.
Blogs a personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites, etc. on a regular basis
Streaming Media Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider
Embedded Media Media/media links that can be included in an HTML page, such as Windows Media streams, Audio files or GIF animations. Our custom player includes an embedded media player
