| Term | Definition |

| Application Software | A type of software that includes programs that help people do certain tasks |
| Binary Code | language a computer can understand. made up of 1's and 0's |
| Boot | The process of starting or restarting a computer |
| Byte | A single character of data. a GB equals 1,000,000,000 bytes of data |
| Central Processing Unit | a silicon chip that processes data and carries out instructions given to the computer, also know as a microprocessor |
| Compact Disk | An optical storage device that uses laser technology to store data |
| Computer | A device that can store, retrieve, manipulate and process data |
| floppy disk | magnetic storage device. Enclosed in a plastic sleeve |
| Graphical user interface | allows people to select text, icons, and menu items to choose commands and files to start apps` |
| Hard Drive | storage device that reads and writes data from round disks in the computer |
| Hardware | physical equipment including cpu, hard drive, monitor, kayboard |
| Headphones | output device that emits sound |
| Info tech | use of tech tools refereed to as it |
| Input device | device that send info to the computer |
| output device | device that receives info from the computer |
| Modem type of expansion card | type of expansion card that receives info via telephone to and from a compter |
| monitor | output device that displays computer |
| Mouse | hand held device, controls the cursor |
| Network | a link between two or more computers to share files |
| Operating system | System software that manages the whole computer |
| Keyboard | an input device that is used to type |
| Peripherals | secondary components of the computer such as printers and scanners |
| Printer | an output device that transfers info on hard copies such as paper |
| Processing | a basic computer function, when a computer uses information |
| program | also called an application or software, a series of ordered instructions |
| Random access memory | A number of silicon chips that holds information thats being used by the cpu. short term memory |
| Read only memory | a small bit of memory, lets the computer boot up. tells computer how to begin to load its OS |
| Scanner | input device that scans images and papers to a computer |
| software | known as programs or applications |
| Storage | refers to when information is saved on a computer |
