key terms and dfinitions

TermDefinition
Software A set of instructions, also called a program or application, that tells a computer how to perform tasks.
Operating system Software that controls all of the other software programs and allows the compute to perform basic tasks.
Hardware All of the physical parts of a computer.
Digital Information that is represented as individual pieces of data using the numbers 1 and 0, rather than as a continuous stream.
Hard Drive The built-in storage device inside a computer.
Input Information that is entered into a computer.
Output Information that a computer produces or processes.
External Storage Devices A storage device that can be easily removed from a computer ans is often small and portable.
Read-only Memory (ROM) Memory that holds data that can be read by a digital devices but cannot be changed or deleted.
E-portfolio A collection of the best documents and projects that is created and saved in an electronic format.

Browser An application that reads the contents of web pages and displays them on your computer screen.
Hyperlink Any text or graphic on a web page that will take you to a new location when clicked.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) A unique web address that directs a browser to a web page.
Domain Name The part of a URL that usually identifies the owner or the subject of a web site.
Search Engine A web site that finds pages that contain words you tell it to search
Boolean operator A word that can make an internet search more specific and effective.
Virus A small computer program that can copy itself repeatedly in a computer system and cause a variety of problems.
