Graphs, Tables, and Diagrams to study

QuestionAnswer
How do graphs represent data? Through visual pictures of information
How do diagrams represent data? Through drawings of something that shows how it is put together, how it works, or how the parts relate to one another
How do tables represent data? Through rows and columns that organize words and numbers
What is the difference in between a chart and a graph? A table is a list; a chart is usually a picture or pictures. Charts can/do include graphs, bars, and pie charts to represent the information.
What are the properties of a table? A table presents the data as a table of rows and columns, and is used to see details and compare values.
What are some types of Graphs/Charts? Bar Graph Pie Chart Line Graph Pictogram (Pictograph)
What are line graphs? A line graph show sets of data points plotted over a time period and connected by straight lines. It has the added advantage of being able to show two or more sets of data in one chart.
What are line graphs useful for displaying? -Any set of figures that needs to be shown over time -Results from two or more groups compared over time -Data trends over time -Often the horizontal line shows time; the vertical line shows amounts
What should you not use line graphs for? If there is too many data points, small variations in values, or values that jump from being very small to very large.
What are bar graphs? Choose a column or a bar graph when you want to represent a simple comparison of data. Bar graphs show quantities represented by horizontal or vertical bars
What are bar graphs useful for displaying? -activity of one thing through time -several categories of results at once -data sets with few observation
What types of bar graphs are there? There are many types of bar graphs including a stacked bar graph which shows very detailed information.
What can pie charts do? Pie charts can quickly show proportions in relation to a whole, with each wedge usually representing a percentage of the total rather than raw numbers.
What are pie charts useful for displaying? -component parts of a whole in percentages which total 100% -budget, geographic or population analysis
What should you NOT use a pie chart for? DO NOT use a pie chart is there are too many divisions because it makes it too difficult to label and read. If possible, limit the number of divisions to eight or less.
What does a pictogram do? A pictogram is a graph which uses pictures or symbols to show information about how often something occurs to represent an assigned amount of data.
