| Term | Definition |

| Twisted Pair Cable | Pairs of wires twisted together Used for telephone and network connections |
| Coaxial Cable | Thick center wire. Used for cable TV and network connections |
| Fiber Optic Cable | Glass or fiber strands through which light can pass. Used for high-speed communications. |
| Internal Network Adapter | Connects the computer to a network from within the computer |
| Wireless Network Adapter | Connects the computer to a network without cables |
| Cable Modem | a device used to connect PC to the Internet. Usually provided by a cable company and stays connected to the internet 24 hours a day |
| Wireless Access Point | a device that connects computers to a network without cables |
| Router | A device that connects computers to a network and finds the best path for data to travel to other networks |
| Switch | creates a network and enables devices to talk to each other efficiently. |
| Gateway | A device that connects two computer networks that use different protocols |
| Bridge | joins two similar types of networks so that they look like one network |
| Repeater | extend the distance over which data can safely travel. |
| Server | A system that provides network services such as file storage and file transfer |
