Section II: Europe Goes to War

Why did the Germans want to attack France by going through the Belgium border? France has built up great fortresses and defensive lines on its borders with Germany.
Why was it important to Germany to strike at France with a massive and rapid attack? In order for the Schlieffen Plan to work the Germans had to gain control of France before Russia could organize and transport it's soldiers to help France.
Why did the Belgium fight Germany? The Germans demanded that the Belgium allow German troops to pass through it. The Belgians refused.
What was Germany's main target in France? They wanted to take Paris.
How long did it take Germany to push through the Belgium forces? Three weeks.
