unit 2 terms & defs

TermDefinition
Computer An electronic device that processes data.
Personal computer (a.k.a. pc) used by one person at a time.
Central processing unit (a.k.a. cpu) the computer’s brain
Bit The smallest unit of information (always a 1 or a 0)
Byte The building block for all information that flows through a computer
Hardware The collection of physical devices that make up your computer system
Input Is when a user enters information into a computer
Output Is when a computer delivers information back to a user.
Random-access memory (a.k.a. RAM) random access to anything saved on a computer to a storage device.
Read-only memory (a.k.a. ROM) memory storage device for a specific item
Storage device A place to store memory in such as a hard drive, flash drive, cd’s, dvd’s, and floppy disks
Software A set of instructions that makes it possible for your computer to perform its tasks
Operating system (a.k.a. OS) software that is the main program that makes your computer work
Network A group of computers connected together
Drive Largest storage area on a computer
Folder A place to save and organize files.
Files A collection of data
Save as A command that lets your rename a file and at the same time copy the file.
Shortcut And icon that is a direct link to a file or folder
Keyword A word (or words) keyed into a search box that matches the topic you are looking for.
Content search A list of information from a list of categories and topics
Keyword search One or more keywords.
