Introducing Your Computer

Computer An electronic device that processes data
Personal Computer Are also called microcomputers, Are used by one person at a time
Central Processing Unit A CPU, or microprocessor is a small chip that performs calculations and carries out all the instuctions you give to your computer
Bit Is the smallest unit of information
Byte The building block for all the information that flows through the computer, and it is eight bits
Hardware The collection of physical devices that make up your computer system. Also called comoponets
Input Is when someone enters information into the computer
Output Is when someone delivers information back to the user
Random Access Memory The memory that is temporary information that your computer uses only when you work with a particular file. It is erased when you turn off your computer
Read Only Memory The memory that is permanent information on your computer.ROM holds your computers built in instructions and cannot be erased or changed
Storage Device When you save a file, you save it from your RAM to your storage device such as a floppy disk, flash drive, CD's and DVD's Hard Drives.
Software A set of instructions that makes it possible for your computer to perform tasks
Operating System The main program that makes your computer work
Network A group of computers connected together
Drive Largest story area
Folder a place to save and organize files
File a collection of data
Save As Lets you duplicate or copy a file, rename, and save it to a new location
Shortcut An icon that is a direct link to a file or folder
Keyword A word keyed into the search bar that matches the topic you are searching for
Content search Looks for all information from a list of categories and topics
Keyword Search Key one or more keywords
