Internet The Internet is a gigantic computer network that connects computers across the world.
World Wide Web The World Wide Web (the web) is only one part of the Internet.
Web site A Web site is a specific location on the Web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group, or organization.
uniform resource locator (URL) Just as every home or business has its own address, every Web site has its own address that no other site can use.
Internet service provider (ISP) An Internet service provider (ISP) is a company that sells you access to the Internet, usually for a monthly fee.
Web browser A Web browser is a software program that lets you surf the Web and interact with Web sites.
Electronic mail (e-mail) Electronic mail (e-mail) is another way that you can share information using the Internet.
Netiquette Netiquette refers to the good manners one uses in electronic communications.
Spam Spam is like junk mail.
Firewall A firewall is hardware or software that protects a computer or network from intruders.
Home page The first Web page you see when your browser opens is called your home page.
Drill down When you explore a Web site, you usually start with the home page and drill down to find more specific information.
Site map A link to the site map, an index of all the main pages in the site that you may use to jump straight to a page without drilling down.
Bookmark A bookmark is a shortcut stored in your browser that takes you directly to a Web page.
Favorites In the Internet Explorer browser, bookmarks are called Favorites.
History Your browser keeps track of every page you have visited for the past few days or even weeks.
Print preview Print preview allows you to view a page so you can see how it will look when it is printed.
Search engine Is a special kind of Web site that lets you search for other Web pages using keywords.
Boolean search This is a search that uses keywords plus special symbols to find the exact information you want by eliminating search results that are too general or too broad.
