Term | Definition |

Advocacy | The ability to communicate in a confident, non-threatening manner |
Anorexia | An eating disorder in which a person doesn’t eat enough food to maintain a healthy body weight |
Anxiety Disorder | A disorder characterized by a general feeling of panic that persists/lasts for a long time – often times with no specific cause |
Binge Eating Disorder | An eating disorder in which a person regularly has an uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food |
Bulimia | An eating disorder in which a person has uncontrollable eating binges followed by purging |
Compulsion | An unreasonable need to behave in a certain way to prevent a feared outcome |
Culture | Beliefs and patterns of behavior that are shared by a group of people and passed from generation to generation |
Depression | A type of mood disorder in which a person feels sad, helpless, and hopeless for an extended period of time |
Mental Disorder | Any abnormal thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that affects a person’s ability to function on a day to day basis |
Mood Disorder | A disorder characterized by a person having extreme swings in emotions |
Obsession | An unwanted thought or image that takes control of the mind |
Personality Disorder | A mental disorder characterized by rigid patterns of behavior, which make it difficult to get along with others |
Phobia | Extreme anxiety related to a specific situation or object |
Psychiatrist | A physician who can diagnose and treat mental disorders. Can prescribe medications |
Psychologist | A person who studies how people think, feel, and behave |
Schizophrenia | A disorder characterized by a person being “split off” from reality resulting in severe disturbances in thinking, mood, awareness, and behavior |
Stereotypes | An exaggerated belief or overgeneralization about an entire group of people |
Therapy | A general term used to described a variety of methods in which to treat people with emotional and social issues |
Wellness | A state of high-level and well-balanced overall health |
Passive | A term that is used to describe people who hold back their true feelings and simply go along with other people |
Aggressive | A term that describes people who express opinions and feelings in a way that may seem threatening or disrespectful |
Assertive | A term that describes people who are able to stand up confidently for themselves while expressing their feelings in a way that is not threatening to others |
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder | A type of anxiety disorder in which a person that has survived a life-threatening event experiences flashbacks or nightmares that produce intense fear or horror |
