Word Lesson 5

TermDefinition
Margins The blank areas around the top, bottom, and sides of a page. Word has a default that can be changed. This is located on the page layout tab.
Alignment Refers to the position of text between the margins. Is located on the home tab in the paragraph group. There is center, left, right, justify.
Left Align Text lined up on left margin. Located on the home tab, paragraph group.
Right Align Text lined up on right margin. Located on the home tab, paragraph group. Used for page numbers and dates.
Center Align Text lined up in the center. Located on the home tab, paragraph group. Used for titles, poems, and songs.
Justify Text lined up evenly on left and right margins. Located on the home tab, paragraph group. Used in books.
Bullets Any small character that appears before an item. Located on the home tab, paragraph group. Used in lists. You can use any picture or symbol.
Vertical Alignment Refers to positioning text between the top and bottom margins of the document. Located on the page layout tab, page setup, open the dialogue box. Used for invitations and flyers.
Mirrored Margins Instead of left and right margins the page has inside and outside margins. Located on the page layout tab. Used for books and magazines.
Inside Margin Also called the gutter margin. The right margin is on a left page and the left margin is on a right page. Located on the page layout tab. Used in books.
Outside Margin Left margin is on a left page and right margin is on a right page. Located on the page layout tab. Used in a book or magazine.
Indent Is the space between text and a documents margin. Located on the page layout tab in the paragraph group.
First-Line Indent Is only the first line of a paragraph is indented. The top marker on the ruler. Located on the home tab, paragraph group, dialogue box, special group. Used in books newspapers, and stories.
Negative Indent Can create by dragging the indent markers on the ruler to the left past the left margin. Located in the paragraph group or on the ruler. Used in notes or comments on a document.
Hanging Indent The full first line of text is not indented bu the following lines are. Located on the ruler or in the paragraph group. Used for lists, glossaries, and bibliography.
Tab Stops or Tabs Marking the place where the insertion point will stop when you press the tab key. Located on the ruler or the home tab. Used to make tables or aligns number items.
Leaders Solid, dotted, or dashed lines that are filling the blank space before a tab setting. Located in the tabs dialogue box in the paragraph group. Used in a table of contents.
Multi-Level List A list with two or more levels of bullets or numbering. Located in the paragraph group in the home tab. Used in outlines.
