| Independent Retailer | Small shop owned and managed by one person. |
| Supermarket | Large shop selling a variety of goods. E.g. Dunnes stores Tesco. |
| Voluntary Group | A number of small retailers who have joined with a wholesaler to form a group. Eg. Super Valu. |
| Chain Store | A number of shops owned by the same firm, E.g. Dunnes Stores. Sells a wide variety of goods. |
| Multiple Store | A number of shops owned by the same firm, E.g. Easons. Specialises in a particular type of product. |
| Discount Store | Sells products cheaper than other retail outlets due to bulk buying. |
| Shopping Centre | A number of shops under the one roof. |
| Department Store | A large store selling a variety of goods under the one roof such as clothes, makeup, jewellery, hardware, footwear. Eg. Debenhams. |
