Elements and Principles
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | Space, Line, Shape, Form, Texture & Color. |
What are the principles of design? | Balance, Rhythm,Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity. |
What is the principle repetition? | Design is copied or repeated. |
How does texture affect color? | Smooth surfaces reflect more light than rough surfaces making them brighter and lighter. Rough surfaces absorb more light making them look darker and less intense. |
What do curved lines suggest? | Soft, graceful effect. |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | In a vertical balance, top and bottom parts are equal. In a horizontal balance, left and right parts are equal. In a radial balance, elements radiate out from the design. |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | Action, movement, and excitement. |
What is space? | The area provided for a particular purpose. |
What are the four types of rhythm? | Gradation, Radiation, Repetition, Contiguous Line. |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | Parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. |
What is the difference between shape and form? | Shape is a flat silhouette or image, and form outlines the edges of a three dimensional object. |
What are the five types of balance? | Symmetrical balance, Asymmetrical balance, Vertical Balance, Horizontal Balance, Radial Balance. |
What does unity or harmony mean? | All Elements and principles of design work together to create harmony. |
What are the two things texture involves? | Involves how the surface feels t the tough and how it appears to feel. |
What are the four types of line? | Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, and Curved lines. |
What is proportion? | How the design is visually divided and that each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole. |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | Radial Balance suggests excitement or interest. |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | Symmetrical Balance is when both parts are identical. Ex: Plants |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | Emphasis is one item or or one object that stands out. It is the focal point of the design. |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | When you use a continuous line the design creates a continuous line for the eye to follow. |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | Formal Balance. |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | Informal Balance. |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | Gradation is when designs increase or decrease in size, and when one element of design changes. Radiation is when lines or designs move out from the center point. |
