Elements and Princ.
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the elements of design? | space, line, shape, form, texture, color |
What are the principles of design? | balance, rhythm, proportion, scale, emphasis, unity |
What is the principle repetition? | when the design is copied or repeated |
How does texture affect color? | smooth surfaces reflect more light, while rough surfaces absorb more light (making the color look lighter or darker) |
What do curved lines suggest? | they add a soft and graceful effect |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? | vertical balance is when the top and bottom parts are equal, horizontal is when the left and right sides are equal, and radial is when elements radiate out from the design |
What do diagonal lines suggest? | action, movement, excitement |
What is space? | the area provided for decorating |
What are the four types of rhythm? | gradation, radiation, repetition, continuous line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? | parts of the design aren't identical but are visually equal |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? | horizontal leads the eye left to right, while vertical leads the eye up and down |
What is the golden mean? | the 3:5 ratio of perfect proportion |
What is the difference between shape and form? | shape is flat, while form is a 3-d object |
What are the five types of balance? | symmetrical, asymmetrical, horizontal, vertical, and radial |
What does unity or harmony mean? | when all of the elements and principles come together in a design |
What are the two things texture involves? | how it feels to touch, and how it appears to feel |
What are the four types of lines? | diagonal, horizontal, vertical, curved |
What is proportion? | when each part is a right size to the whole |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? | radial |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? | when both parts are identical |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? | when one thing stands out (focal point) |
What happens when you use a continuous line? | it makes the room appear to be bigger |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? | formal balance |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? | informal balance |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? | gradation is when designs increase or decrease in size, radiation is when designs radiate out from the center |
