Elements and Principals of Design

QuestionAnswer
What Are The Elements of Design? Space, Line, Shape, Form, Texture, and Color
What are the principles of design? Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity
What is the principle repetition? When the design or color is copied or repeated
How does texture affect color? Smotth surfaces reflect more light than a rougher surface, therefore making them brighter and lighter Rouh surfaces absorb more light therefore making them look darker and less intense
What do curved lines suggest? They give a soft, graceful feel to the room. But too many will make it look busy
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Horizontal balance- when left and right parts are equal Vertical Balance- when top and bottom parts are equal Radial Balance- when elements go outward from design
What do diagonal lines suggest? Action, movement and excitement; should be use in small amounts
What is space? The area provided for articular purpose (can have 2 or 3 dimensions)
What are the four types of rhythm? Gradation-designs increase or decrease in size Radiation-Lines/Designs move out from center point Repetition- Design is copied or repeated Continuous- Creates a continuous line for eye to follow
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? Parts of design are not identical but are equal in visual weight ex. Two ends of a dresser do not have the same items on each side but LOOK eqaul
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Vertical lines lead the eye up and down(suggesting more formality) Horizontal lines lead the eye side to side(suggesting more informality)
What is the golden mean? 3 to 5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? Shape is a flat, 2 dimensional image Form has 3 dimensions including depth
What are the five types of baance? Symmetrical balance(both parts are identical) Asymmetrical balance(not identical but loo equal) Vertical Balance(top and bottom parts are equal) Horizontal Balance(left and right parts are equal) Radial Balance(radiate out from center point)
What does unit or harmony mean? When all principles of design work together and create harmony
What are the two things texture involves? How the surface appears to the touch and how it appears to the feel
What are the four types of line? Vertical<-> Horizontal(up and down) Diagonal(corner to corner) Curved
What is proportion? each of the parts are the right size to belong to the whole
Which of the five types of balance suggest excitement or interest? Radial Balance
What is symmetrical balance? When both parts are identical ex. plants, insects, or humans
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? when one item or object stands out(focal point)
What happens when you use continuous line? makes eye follow around the room
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation is when design increases or decreases in size Radiation is when lines or desig move out from center point
