Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Substance a single kind of matter that is pure; it always has a specific composition and properties
Physical Properties a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
Chemical Properties a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
Element a simplest substance; a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by physical or chemical means; can be identified by its specific physical or chemical properties
Atom a basic particle from which all elements are made
Compound is a pure substance of 2 or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio; is difficult to separate into its elements
Mixture is made up of 2 or more substances that are together in a same place, but not chemically combined; each substance in a mixture keeps its individual parts, the mixture parts aren't combined in a set ratio, mixture can be separated into its components
Heterogeneous mixture you can see the different parts
Homogeneous mixture is a solution-you cannot see the different parts
Solution does not have to be a liquid
