Internet a gigantic coputer network that connects computers across the world.
World Wide Web The huge collection of informatioin, services, and Web sites accessible through the internet.
Website A specific location on the web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group, or organization.
Uniform resource locator (URL) a web site's own unique internet address that no other web site can use (pg. 86)
Internet service provider A company that sells you access to the internet, usually for a monthly fee.
Web browser A software program that lets you surf the web and interact with websites.
electronic mail (e-mail) is another way that you can share information using the internet. Email is a communication sent from one personto another, or to many people, over the internet
Netiquette Refers to the good manners one uses in electronic communications.
Spam JUNK mail. sent in bulk to many people's e-mail accounts. spam is almost always sent for one reason" to sell you something.
Firewall A hardware or software that protects a computer or network from intruders
Home page The firstweb pge you see when your browser is open is called you home page
Drill down To move from general information to more detailed information by exploring a series of folders, drop-down menus, or Web pages (pg. 99)
Site map An index of the main pages in a Web pagewithout drilling down (p. 99)
Bookmark A shortcut that takes you directly to a web page. (pg.101)
Favorites Internet Explorer's term for web site bookmarks
History A record kept by a browser of every Web page visited in the past few days or weks. (p. 101)
Print Preview A browser function used to see how a document or Webpage is going to appear on paper (p. 103)
Search engine a web site used to seek out other web papges using keywords (p.110)
Boolean search A search that uses keywords plus special symbols to find more exact results (p. 112)
